The air coil compared to the laminated core choke – a low-noise choke

Air coils are inductive components, but without low magnetic core material. Basically, air coils are also chokes, just without laminated cores.

At an operating voltage of 72 kV and short-term currents of up to 3,000 Amperes, the use of large-dimensioned air coils is advantageous. Because these pure air coils, i.e. without a large and heavy sheet metal laminated core, can conduct high currents for short periods of time without losing their rated inductance and without the core material used for magnetic reinforcement becoming saturated.

Due to the absence of a sheet metal laminated core, the air coil emits only minimal noise. This is particularly true for feedback systems and output chokes. In addition, the increased heating caused by the sheet metal laminated core is eliminated. Special winding structures can minimize the losses of the higher frequencies in the winding.

Overcurrent can be achieved without any loss of inductance, i.e. the air coil never goes into saturation, unlike a laminated iron core choke.

Just the cross-section of the winding must be designed for the increased current to avoid thermal overload of the winding. This choke is particularly optimal for short-term over-currents, as it can limit the short-term current without any loss of inductance and the thermal adaptation must be low because it is only a short-term heating.

The only disadvantage of the air coil is its larger size, because the amplification effect of the metal sheet package is missing.

This type of choke can also be used at various frequencies without changing its inductance. This means, for example, that this choke can be used as a mains choke and feedback choke.

Our standard products in the appendix can operate in a frequency spectrum of 10 to 300 Hz. At the same time, clock frequencies of 2 to 12 kHz can also be achieved.

For a three-phase system, you need three individual air coils.
