To make rectifier circuits even more effective, the number of pulses is increased. This significantly reduces the residual ripple in the output voltage while also substantially reducing harmonics and, consequently, the impact on the utility grid at the input. Low grid harmonics are becoming increasingly important, especially at high power levels.

Everyone is familiar with classic bridge rectification: single-phase with 2 pulses or in a three-phase system with 6 pulses. For many applications, however, these standard solutions are no longer sufficient—neither in terms of output voltage ripple nor with regard to input-side power quality, which is particularly important today.

In 12-pulse circuits, the improvement in harmonics can be achieved relatively easily by appropriately adjusting the transformer’s tap settings. In contrast, 18- and 24-pulse circuits are significantly more demanding. Here, high requirements regarding winding configuration and interconnection must be met. Key factors include optimal adjustment of the number of turns, very similar short-circuit voltages (uk) in all windings, and numerous other design details necessary for reliable and symmetrical operation.

Helpful technical measures include, for example, distributed windings and shield windings, which contribute to system optimization.
