ZNa0 Economy Transformer
Description
Why do we sometimes use ZNa0 instead of YNa0 in economy transformers?
- Despite requiring about 15% more material and manufacturing effort than YNa0, the ZNa0 connection group offers significant technical advantages in terms of power quality, operational reliability, and voltage stability. It is primarily used when unbalanced loads, numerous single-phase loads, or harmonics are expected.
- The zigzag connection reduces harmonics of the 3rd, 9th, and 15th orders, as these circulate within the transformer and do not enter the power grid. This significantly reduces grid disturbances.
- By dividing each phase between two sub-windings, unbalanced loads are better balanced. This reduces neutral conductor currents and improves performance under unbalanced loads compared to the YNa0 connection.
- ZNa0 produces a particularly stable neutral or star point. This is particularly advantageous in grids with many single-phase loads or unbalanced loads and increases operational reliability.
- The zigzag connection limits the propagation of zero-sequence currents and largely confines them within the transformer. This reduces power system disturbances and improves voltage quality as well as electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
